FantasyJungle.com Spotlight by Marc Quitsch
Fantasy Football in July. You've got to love it. To the hardcore fantasy football player, you've been waiting ever since the day after the Giants beat the Patriots in the Superbowl for fantasy football to come again. July is the month where fantasy football satellites start jumping. Mini-camps open, and you're getting a good picture of what teams may look like, come September, when the NFL begins their regular season. But then again, in July, everything you know could be wrong when September comes too. You've got to love it.
If you know me, you'll know that I've been doing fantasy football drafts since MAY in the NFFC. I have two drafts printed in "Krause Magazine's Fantasy Football", and I also have a 26 round auction underneath my belt as well, and it's only July 20th. If you've never heard of the NFFC, you can find it online at www.nationalfantasyfootballchampionship.com . It has been my favorite place to play fantasy for five years now.
I haven't played in any other site other than the NFFC since 2004, but a friend told me about www.fantasyjungle.com . The jungle adds two different elements to fantasy play that immediately made me join three online satellite leagues, here in 2008.
#1- They offer $50 online satellite leagues.(Some that you control throughout the year, and some that you draft your team and then leave it alone for the season. No free agent pickups and you don't start/sit. Draft it and forget it until the season's end.) I could not pass up $50 leagues, and I can't believe I'd never heard of fantasyjungle.com before. That entry fee is great for the industry. These leagues award one winner a $500 entry into their online "Main Event", where each league winner there wins $1,500, and a shot at $50,000. For an initial $50 entry, that's insane. I love it. They also give discounts when purchasing multiple leagues. This site is arguably the best bang for your buck in fantasy football. Especially since it runs with a much smaller entry fee than most other football contests.
#2- The rosters here have your average normal starting lineup of 1 QB, 2 RB's, 3 WR's, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Defense and 1 Flex position...What seperates this contest from most others is that it's flex position can be filled with a WR, RB, TE, or QB...So you can have TWO QB's in your lineup every week. They only award 3 points per passing TD here, but in my opinion, having two QB's in your lineup each week would make you a strong contender in your league.
On July 17, I drew the 9 spot in fantasyjungle.com's "masters" online satellite. The "masters" leagues are leagues that you draft, and let it ride. No in-season moves. No work, after the draft. Using www.ultimatefantasyfootballcheatsheets.com 's rankings, I wound up with a solid core of Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Clinton Portis, Anquan Boldin, Tony Gonzalez, Dwayne Bowe and Hines Ward. I don't want to show all of my picks here, as I have a few more drafts to go and wouldn't want to show the world my double secret sleeper picks of 2008, yet. :) I don't think anyone uses any cheatsheet, verbatim, but I would refer Russ Steele's cheatsheets for fantasyjungle.com drafts, as they did help me by knowing where clusters of players would be drated in the middle rounds. Believe me, if you have a player targeted in the next few rounds, but notice that he's within 12 spots on these cheatsheets, you're going to take that player NOW, or you're not going to get him. Every draft will be different, but I must say Russ' sheets were very close here. Time will tell. At season's end, I'll post how I did in my 3-4 satellites in this contest. I'll take any praise or any razz that comes along with it. I'm easy like that.
I participate in many NFFC live events each year. So if you're in NY for any of their live events on August 29th and August 30th, feel free to stop by and talk some fantasy football.
Good luck in fantasy football this year.
